Children and Chiropractic

Chiropractic care for children is safe, gentle, and effective. From the birth process onward, our spines and nervous systems are subjected to forces that can misalign (subluxate) vertebrae and set the stage for reduced well being and future health problems. Dr. Hinkle is especially skilled in providing adjustments to children specifically adapted for your child's age, height, and weight. For a small infant, the force of an adjustment is similar to the amount of force one would use to type on a computer keyboard! She has completed an additional 200 hours of coursework in pediatric and prenatal chiropractic care. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.

What Conditions or Illnesses Can Benefit From Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractors look at the spine to see what areas are subluxated. When the child is adjusted, the nerves exiting that area of the spine are stimulated and interference is removed to restore movement and function. Therefore, areas of the body which those nerves connect to and control will also function optimally. This includes the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, and immune system. Chiropractors do not cure diseases, but rather enhance the body's innate ability to heal itself through chiropractic adjustments and holistic care. Parents and children under chiropractic care report improvements with certain conditions ranging from mild to tremendous! Though chiropractors only directly care for the spine, children under chiropractic care have had great improvements with the following conditions: ADHD/ADD Allergies Asthma and respiratory problems Autism Bed wetting Breast feeding difficulties Colic Constipation Digestive issues Ear infections Headaches Immune function Scoliosis Sensory integration issues Sinus infections Sleeping trouble Sports injuries Torticollis And much, much, more! Pregnancy and Chiropractic

Pregnancy is a time of amazing changes in a woman’s body. When pregnant, the mother must adapt and compensate for many postural and hormonal changes. Gentle, prenatal chiropractic care helps to balance the mother’s pelvis and spine and allow for an easier birthing process. When the mother’s body is in balance, her growing child can develop in a healthier environment.

Potential benefits for women receiving chiropractic care when pregnant include:
Relief of back, neck, pelvic, and joint pain Controlling vomiting and morning sickness Increasing the likelihood of a full-term delivery Reduction in amount of time for labor and delivery Reduction in cesarean sections and breech deliveries Reduction in pain during labor Safe and effective nutritional and exercise recommendations For more information on pregnancy and chiropractic please visit the ICPA website
Dr. Hinkle is Certified in the Webster Technique.
What is it?
The Webster Technique helps to correct sacral misalignment and balance pelvic muscles and ligaments, which in turn removes torsion to the woman’s uterus, its resulting constraint to the baby, and allows the baby to get into the best possible position for birth. Pregnant moms with babies in the breech position visit chiropractors for this safe and gentle technique. The Webster Technique increases the space around the uterus giving the baby the room it needs to turn. Even expecting moms that are progressing well in their pregnancy can benefit from the Webster Technique because it helps to bring mom to optimal health as well as optimize the health and space for baby!
How does it work?
The chiropractor will give an adjustment and ligament massage to the pregnant mother. This process relieves muscle tension and bony misalignments in the mother’s pelvis that may be stopping the baby from turning “head down” or having as much room as possible to move during delivery. The technique is used to relieve the musculoskeletal causes of intrauterine constraint that may lead to cesarean section delivery.
Why would a pregnant mom choose this technique?
Unlike an external cephalic version (ECV) performed by an obstetrician under strong medications, the Webster Technique is natural, uses no drugs, and is gentle to the mother and child. Most importantly, the technique facilitates the correct environment to allow the birth process to proceed as nature intended.
How effective is it?
Research has repeatedly found that moms who use the Webster Technique have an 85% success rate of allowing a breech baby to turn compared to the 35% success rate with an ECV. Some moms only need one adjustment before their baby turns head down! References: 1. Peter, RP. “Back Pain During Pregnancy and Labor.” JMPT. 14(2) 1991. 116-118. 2. 3. Craniosacral Therapy:
Craniosacral Therapy (CST), as defined by the Upledger Institute, is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system – comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.
Reiki (pronounced RAY-key):
Japanese word representing universal life energy, the energy which is all around us. It is derived from rei, meaning “free passage” or “transcendental spirit” and ki, meaning “vital life force energy” or “universal life energy”. Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation, which triggers the body’s natural healing abilities, and improves and maintains health. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery
Infant Massage:
Having numerous benefits for baby, parents and society, loving touch lessens tension, fussiness and irritability. Digestion is aided and this can provide relief of gas and colic. Massage is also a wonderful way to lessen stress parent and baby. Touch conveys nurturing and love, the essential ingredients for emotional and physical growth and well being. Studies have shown increased weight gain, and immune function. Myelination of nerves is also increased. These things in turn are needed for brain and muscle development. Parents become more aware of baby’s nonverbal cues. One-on-one communication instills a message of love and security. As your infant learns to relax and release stress, sounder and longer sleep is often the end result. Sign up for a 4 week course on infant massage. Price of $150 includes 4, one hour sessions taught by Certified Infant Massage instructor, Debbie Couture.
